Steam Accounts Hacked
Valve’s Gabe Newell has confirmed that the PC cloud based service, Steam, has been hacked. Vital information such as user information and credit card details have been compromised in the attack.

The PC service had it’s forums defaced and upon further investigation Newell and the Valve team discovered an even deeper intrusion. Here’s a segment of a statement from Newell detailing the attack:
“We learned that intruders obtained access to a Steam database in addition to the forums. This database contained information including user names, hashed and salted passwords, game purchases, email addresses, billing addresses and encrypted credit card information. We do not have evidence that encrypted credit card numbers or personally identifying information were taken by the intruders, or that the protection on credit card numbers or passwords was cracked. We are still investigating.”
The service remains available at the moment. However, the forums remain down until further notice. Forum users will be prompted to change their password when the service resumes, Newell also advises that passwords should be changed for all Steam accounts just to be safe.
